Ruto’s Roar Forces Washington’s Hand.

 By   Justin Kirangacha| The Common Pulse/latest news/Ethiopia/Eritrea /US/ Kenya/Abroad/Africa / OCTOBER2025.

After Kenya’s President William Ruto publicly slammed earlier U.S. donations as “used, unreliable, and dangerous,” the U.S. has shipped 20 brand new armored vehicles to Haiti.

This bold move signals Washington’s desire to restore credibility in its support and reassure troop-contributing nations. Keywords: new fleet, credibility, turnaround.

Ruto’s Rebuke: “Death Traps” in Dangerous Zones

At the UN General Assembly, Ruto pulled no punches: many of the earlier armored vehicles were second-hand, prone to breakdowns, and thus exposed Kenyan forces to extreme risk in gang-controlled areas.
He said the faulty logistics “put our personnel in great danger when they broke down in very dangerous places.”
Keywords: risk, safety, accountability.

Bolstering Haiti’s Security: GSF & Haitian Police Get Reinforcements

The newly delivered vehicles are meant to strengthen both the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and the Haitian National Police (HNP) in their fight against violent gangs that hold sway over large swathes of Port-au-Prince.
This is part of a renewed push to make the post-Kenya MSS mission more effective under the GSF umbrella.
Keywords: capacity, reinforcement, anti-gang operations.

From MSS to GSF: A Reshuffling of Haiti Mission Structure

The U.N. is phasing out the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, and transitioning to a larger, more empowered Gang Suppression Force (GSF)
One major critique from Ruto: MSS operated at only 40% of its intended manpower, and logistics were deeply flawed.
The new GSF is expected to have a broader mandate, more reliable support, and a revamped command structure.
Keywords: restructuring, mandate, mission shift.

The Human Cost: Accidents, Deaths & Fragile Morale

The logistical issues haven’t been mere inconveniences  they’ve had tragic consequences. In late August 2025, a Kenyan police officer died when a faulty armored vehicle broke down while being towed.
Additionally, multiple Kenyan officers have now lost their lives or been injured in Haiti some to gang ambushes, others in accidents involving subpar equipment.
Such incidents fuel doubts and low morale amongst contributing forces. Keywords: sacrifice, risk, morale.

Diplomacy, Pressure & Geopolitics Behind the Scenes

The U.S. move is also a strategic gesture: signaling that criticism (even from ally leaders) can yield swift corrective action.
Kenya’s integrity in leading the mission was at stake; Ruto’s public condemnation forced Washington’s hand.
Meanwhile, Haiti, already destabilized by gangs and political vacuum, is under pressure to welcome reforms  and international players are stepping in to shape the outcome. Keywords: geopolitics, accountability, influence.

 What to Watch Next

  1. Vehicle performance & breakdown rate  will these new ones hold up under fire?

  2. GSF leadership & rules of engagement clarity is needed to avoid mission drift.

  3. Troop safety & casualty counts will improved logistics reduce death tolls?

  4. Kenya’s continued role will Kenya remain a core contributor, or pull back?

  5. Public perception & legitimacy in Haiti can the force win hearts and minds, not just battles?

No Exit: Biya’s Return, Democracy’s Decline

By Kirangacha Mwaniki The Common Pulse | August 2025 At 92 years old, Cameroonian President Paul Biya has signaled his intention to run for yet another term in the 2025 presidential election. Having ruled since 1982, Biya is now the second-longest-serving head of state in the world;  after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang. His decision has sparked outrage, resignation, and confusion among Cameroonians, many of whom have never known another leader. This re-election bid is more than just a political event;  it is a glaring symptom of a system that has resisted reform, ignored generational change, and weaponized fear to maintain the status quo. The Man Who Time Forgot Paul Biya came to power before most Cameroonians were born. He has led through the Cold War, the rise of mobile phones, the internet revolution, and the African Continental Free Trade Area — all while aging behind the walls of Etoudi Palace. He is rarely seen in public, often ruling from abroad;  mostly Swit...

Gut Health and the Fermented Food Revolution

B y   Mutunga Tobbias / The Common Pulse/latest news /US/ Kenya/Abroad/Africa / NOVEMBER2025 In recent years, gut health has emerged from the shadows of wellness trends into the mainstream, and fermented foods are leading this movement. No longer seen as niche or exotic, these age-old dietary staples are enjoying a renaissance in modern nutrition, backed by growing scientific evidence linking them to digestive health, immunity, and even mental well-being. The rise of fermented foods, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, miso, and more, is more than a culinary trend; it represents a fundamental shift in how we understand and care for our bodies at the microbial level. The human gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. This intricate ecosystem is involved in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function, and it plays a surprising role in mental health, mood regulation, and metabolic processes. A balanced microbiome can be thoug...
