Negotiations in Motion:

 By   Peninah Mbula| The Common Pulse/latest news/US/ Kenya/Abroad/Africa / OCTOBER2025.

 Negotiators Assemble in Egypt

As of October 6, 2025, negotiators from Hamas and Israel have convened in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to discuss a U.S.-backed peace proposal aimed at ending the two-year-long war in Gaza. The conflict, ignited by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and led to the abduction of 251 hostages, has since resulted in over 67,000 Palestinian deaths and millions displaced.

The Trump Peace Plan

The negotiations center around a comprehensive ceasefire plan introduced by former President Donald Trump. The first phase includes a ceasefire, the release of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawal, and increased humanitarian aid. The second phase focuses on establishing a new governance structure for Gaza, led by a non-Hamas Palestinian technocratic group with international oversight.

 Mediators Urge Patience

Despite the ambitious timeline, mediators caution that a swift agreement is unlikely due to complex issues. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the upcoming technical talks, particularly regarding the release of hostages, will determine Hamas's sincerity toward a resolution.

 Challenges Ahead

The negotiations face several challenges, including Hamas's resistance to disarmament and the need for broader concessions like statehood. Additionally, discrepancies exist between Hamas negotiators in Qatar and militant groups on the ground, complicating the implementation of any agreement.

International Involvement

The talks are being mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. U.S. officials, including White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, are expected to join the talks midweek. The international community remains hopeful but cautious about the prospects of a lasting peace.

 A Glimmer of Hope

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that all hostages held by Hamas in Gaza20 living individuals and the bodies of 28 deceased could be freed by the end of the week. This development stems from a deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, which includes a gradual withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces from Gaza.

Ahead.

While the path to peace remains fraught with obstacles, the ongoing negotiations offer a glimmer of hope for a region long torn by conflict. The coming days will be critical in determining whether this latest effort can bring about a lasting resolution to the Gaza war.

No Exit: Biya’s Return, Democracy’s Decline

By Kirangacha Mwaniki The Common Pulse | August 2025 At 92 years old, Cameroonian President Paul Biya has signaled his intention to run for yet another term in the 2025 presidential election. Having ruled since 1982, Biya is now the second-longest-serving head of state in the world;  after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang. His decision has sparked outrage, resignation, and confusion among Cameroonians, many of whom have never known another leader. This re-election bid is more than just a political event;  it is a glaring symptom of a system that has resisted reform, ignored generational change, and weaponized fear to maintain the status quo. The Man Who Time Forgot Paul Biya came to power before most Cameroonians were born. He has led through the Cold War, the rise of mobile phones, the internet revolution, and the African Continental Free Trade Area — all while aging behind the walls of Etoudi Palace. He is rarely seen in public, often ruling from abroad;  mostly Swit...
