Michigan Church Attack Leaves Family Reeling.

By   Peninah Mbula  | The Common Pulse/latest news/US/Iran/ Kenya/Abroad/Africa / September 2025.

A Sunday Morning Turned to Tragedy

On September 28, 2025, a peaceful Sunday morning service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, was shattered when Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old Iraq War veteran, drove his truck into the church and opened fire on worshippers. The attack resulted in four fatalities and eight injuries, including two critically. Sanford then set the building ablaze before being confronted and killed by police officers.

A Father's Heartbreaking Statement

In the aftermath, Sanford’s father expressed his family's devastation, stating, “We are completely in shock over this. We have no answers. We are asking for privacy as we grieve our loss and those of the others.” He described his son as a loving father and husband, emphasizing the family's shock and confusion over the tragic events.

Investigating the Motive

Authorities are treating the incident as a targeted act of violence. Preliminary investigations suggest that Sanford may have harbored animosity toward the Mormon faith, possibly linked to a past relationship. A local city council candidate reported that Sanford had recently expressed deep hostility toward Mormonism, referring to its members as “the antichrist.”

Community's Response

The Grand Blanc community has rallied together in the wake of the tragedy. Residents have organized vigils and support groups to honor the victims and support the affected families. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has also extended its condolences and is providing counseling services to those impacted by the attack.

The Ongoing Investigation

The FBI continues to lead the investigation into the shooting and arson. Investigators are examining Sanford’s digital footprint and personal history to determine the exact motive behind the attack. The community remains on edge as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the circumstances leading to this devastating event.

No Exit: Biya’s Return, Democracy’s Decline

By Kirangacha Mwaniki The Common Pulse | August 2025 At 92 years old, Cameroonian President Paul Biya has signaled his intention to run for yet another term in the 2025 presidential election. Having ruled since 1982, Biya is now the second-longest-serving head of state in the world;  after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang. His decision has sparked outrage, resignation, and confusion among Cameroonians, many of whom have never known another leader. This re-election bid is more than just a political event;  it is a glaring symptom of a system that has resisted reform, ignored generational change, and weaponized fear to maintain the status quo. The Man Who Time Forgot Paul Biya came to power before most Cameroonians were born. He has led through the Cold War, the rise of mobile phones, the internet revolution, and the African Continental Free Trade Area — all while aging behind the walls of Etoudi Palace. He is rarely seen in public, often ruling from abroad;  mostly Swit...

The rise of fermented foods, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, miso, and more, is more than a culinary trend; it represents a fundamental shift in how we understand and care for our bodies at the microbial level. The human gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. This intricate ecosystem is involved in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function, and it plays a surprising role in mental health, mood regulation, and metabolic processes. A balanced microbiome can be thoug...
