Githurai MCA Deonysias Waithira Resigns in Protest.

 By Mutunga Tobbias | The Common Pulse/latest news/Asia/United States/Africa / September 2025

In a rare and significant move in Kenyan politics, Githurai Ward MCA Deonysias Mwangi Waithira has tendered his resignation from the Nairobi City County Assembly, effective November 1, 2025. This bold decision highlights long-standing frustrations with the Nairobi County Government's inability to deliver on promises and address the pressing needs of constituents in Githurai.

Deonysias Waithira Resigned

Waithira’s resignation was officially communicated in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Nairobi City County Assembly on September 17, 2025. In his letter, he cited the persistent neglect of Githurai Ward and the failure to implement key development projects.

Key issues highlighted by Waithira include:

  • Dilapidated Roads: Roads like Cifu Road, Rurii Powerline Road, Chiro Road, Mucoe Road, Kweche Road, and Kirogo Road remain in a state of disrepair, hindering daily commuting and business activities.

  • Githurai Level 3 Hospital: Despite promises, the hospital remains understaffed and under-equipped, lacking essential facilities like a perimeter wall, functioning ablution blocks, and a maternity wing.

  • Githurai Sports Ground: Promised renovations have not materialized even after being paid for, leaving the community without a functional recreational facility.

Waithira stressed that his resignation was not a personal vendetta but a reflection of the unfulfilled aspirations of Githurai residents, which were repeatedly raised during public participation forums and county planning meetings.

Legal Framework for Resignation

The resignation aligns with Article 194(1)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, which allows a county assembly member to vacate their office through a written resignation addressed to the Speaker.

Additionally, Waithira referenced Section 27 of the County Governments Act, 2012, and the Nairobi County Assembly Standing Orders, which outline the legal process for resigning from the assembly.

Political Implications

Deonysias Waithira’s resignation is notable for several reasons:

Breaking Party Lines: As a member of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, his departure signals internal dissatisfaction within the party ranks.

Highlighting County Failures: His resignation underscores ongoing frustrations among local leaders regarding Nairobi County Executive’s inability to deliver basic services.

Precedent for Accountability: Other MCAs have previously attempted to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja over similar grievances. Waithira’s resignation amplifies pressure on the county government to address these issues.

Public and Political Reactions

Residents of Githurai have expressed mixed reactions. While some applaud Waithira’s bold stand, others fear that the resignation may delay development projects further, leaving the community vulnerable to continued neglect.

Political analysts suggest that this move could reshape Nairobi’s political landscape, especially if it inspires other MCAs to voice frustrations publicly or take similar steps.

Looking Ahead

With Waithira’s resignation taking effect on November 1, 2025, all eyes are on Nairobi County leadership to:

  • Address infrastructure gaps in Githurai.

  • Expedite completion of hospital and sports ground projects.

  • Rebuild trust with residents through transparency and accountability.

Failure to act could result in increased political pressure and public dissatisfaction, potentially influencing upcoming elections in Nairobi.

Deonysias Waithira’s resignation is a wake-up call for Nairobi County Government. It exposes years of unfulfilled promises, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and service delivery in local governance. For the residents of Githurai, this is not just a political statement, it is a plea for their basic rights to infrastructure, healthcare, and recreation to be prioritized.

This resignation may also serve as a political benchmark in Kenya, encouraging leaders to stand up for their constituents rather than remain silent in the face of systemic inefficiencies.

By Kiranagacha Mwaniki - The Common Pulse - Orem, Utah ;  September 13, 2025 The bustling quad of Utah Valley University was supposed to be a stage for debate and free expression. Instead, it became the scene of political violence that has shocked the nation. Charlie Kirk, 31, a conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10 while addressing students at a “Prove Me Wrong” debate. Authorities say the shots came from a nearby rooftop, fired by a young man who had quietly prepared for weeks. On Friday, Utah County officials announced that Tyler James Robinson, 22 , had been taken into custody and charged in connection with Kirk’s killing. He is being held without bail at the Utah County Jail. From Apprentice to Accused Killer Robinson grew up in Washington County, Utah, in what neighbors describe as a quiet household. He worked as an electrical apprentice and once attended Utah State University for a semester in 2021. “He was always ...

No Exit: Biya’s Return, Democracy’s Decline

By Kirangacha Mwaniki The Common Pulse | August 2025 At 92 years old, Cameroonian President Paul Biya has signaled his intention to run for yet another term in the 2025 presidential election. Having ruled since 1982, Biya is now the second-longest-serving head of state in the world;  after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang. His decision has sparked outrage, resignation, and confusion among Cameroonians, many of whom have never known another leader. This re-election bid is more than just a political event;  it is a glaring symptom of a system that has resisted reform, ignored generational change, and weaponized fear to maintain the status quo. The Man Who Time Forgot Paul Biya came to power before most Cameroonians were born. He has led through the Cold War, the rise of mobile phones, the internet revolution, and the African Continental Free Trade Area — all while aging behind the walls of Etoudi Palace.
