Kenya vs Zambia: CHAN 2024 Group A Showdown in Nairobi

The Common Pulse | August 2025

The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, roared to life today as hosts Kenya’s Harambee Stars faced off against Zambia’s Chipolopolo in the final Group A fixture of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Context Before Kickoff

Kenya came into the match flying high, two wins and a draw already securing a spot in the quarterfinals. Zambia, on the other hand, were playing for pride after a disappointing run of results left them at the bottom of the group.

The match carried historical weight: Zambia has traditionally dominated this rivalry, boasting 21 wins in 35 encounters. But Kenya, backed by a passionate home crowd, looked determined to flip the script and underline their resurgence on the continental stage.

Match Atmosphere

From dawn, fan zones in Nairobi, from Uhuru Park to Jacaranda Grounds, were filled with red, black, and green. Inside Kasarani, the chants of “Stars! Stars!” echoed with a playoff-like intensity. Even before the ball was kicked, this felt bigger than just another group game.

On the Pitch

Coach Engin Firat stuck with a strong Harambee Stars lineup led by striker Ryan Ogam, midfield orchestrator Austin Odhiambo, and captain Michael Kibwage anchoring the defense. Zambia’s coach Avram Grant rallied his men to give everything, despite their elimination looming.

Both teams started nervously, with Kenya dominating possession and Zambia looking dangerous on the counter. The Harambee Stars’ youthful energy, particularly from Alpha Onyango in midfield, kept the Chipolopolo backline under constant pressure.

Why It Mattered

For Kenya, this was about more than points, it was about momentum and confidence heading into the quarterfinals. For Zambia, it was a test of character, a chance to walk away from the tournament with their heads held high.

The Bigger Picture

  • Kenya: Unbeaten and growing in confidence, they now await their quarterfinal opponent. The dream of lifting a first-ever CHAN trophy feels more real with each passing game.

  • Zambia: Once a feared continental powerhouse, the Chipolopolo now face tough questions about rebuilding and regaining their competitive edge.

Kenya vs Zambia today was more than a match, it was a statement. The Harambee Stars showed Africa they are not just hosts but genuine contenders. And even in defeat, Zambia reminded fans why this rivalry always carries extra heat.

Authorities say the shots came from a nearby rooftop, fired by a young man who had quietly prepared for weeks. On Friday, Utah County officials announced that Tyler James Robinson, 22 , had been taken into custody and charged in connection with Kirk’s killing. He is being held without bail at the Utah County Jail. From Apprentice to Accused Killer Robinson grew up in Washington County, Utah, in what neighbors describe as a quiet household. No Exit: Biya’s Return, Democracy’s Decline

By Kirangacha Mwaniki The Common Pulse | August 2025 At 92 years old, Cameroonian President Paul Biya has signaled his intention to run for yet another term in the 2025 presidential election. Having ruled since 1982, Biya is now the second-longest-serving head of state in the world;  after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang. His decision has sparked outrage, resignation, and confusion among Cameroonians, many of whom have never known another leader. This re-election bid is more than just a political event;  it is a glaring symptom of a system that has resisted reform, ignored generational change, and weaponized fear to maintain the status quo. The Man Who Time Forgot Paul Biya came to power before most Cameroonians were born. He has led through the Cold War, the rise of mobile phones, the internet revolution, and the African Continental Free Trade Area — all while aging behind the walls of Etoudi Palace. He is rarely seen in public, often ruling from abroad;  mostly Swit...
